Having unlocked the homesteading achievement of processing my own chickens, I started to think about the economics of home butchering. The roosters that I sent to “freezer camp” were hatched from my own eggs (and a few from a neighbor). They were 11 months old, a bit “long in the beak” for eating chickens, but they are dual purpose breeds and do take longer to mature. Honestly, if I counted up the months of chicken feed, I’m sure I spent far more to feed these three roosters than I would have if I’d just purchased a “fryer” from the grocery store.
